　chairの語源は、 “a seat, especially the bishop’s throne in his church”「座席、特に教会の司教の玉座」です。語源的には普通の椅子というよりは、偉い人の椅子を表しています。そこから、 “a seat of authority, state, or dignity”「権威、国家、高官の席」 や、 “the seat of a person presenting a meeting”「会議を主催する人の席」になり、「議長」になっていきます。

　He was in the chair at today’s meeting.

　「彼が今日の会議で議長を務めた」

　chairには動詞もあります。

　名詞で「議長」の意味がありました。これが動詞化して、“act as the chairperson”「議長を務める」になります。
